Saluting 100 Years
An initiative of both the Moreton Bay Regional Council and Federal Government, the newly completed ANZAC Memorial at Buchanan Park stands as a monument to honour the legacy of Australian Defence Forces and Peacekeeping Services. The memorial was constructed in time to mark the recent ANZAC Centennial celebration.
Project landscape architect, John Van Pelt, who himself is a Vietnam Veteran, worked in close collaboration with Dotdash to realise a strong design vision and create a sense of belonging in the community for Returned Servicemen and women.
The Memorial stands as a place for both remembrance and commendation, and materialises the stories of those who served their country in times of peace and conflict.
The site incorporates both abstract and representational forms of historical military symbols, all of which are integrated into the contemporary architectural form.
Dotdash has contributed a family of interpretive elements which aim to heighten the impact of the memorial by thoughtfully communicating its messages.
A range of interpretive text is integrated into the site’s semi-circular concrete wall, designed to reference the character of military bunkers found across Europe and Australia. Here, fabricated lettering, cast bronze panels, and etching on glass recognise significant battles, their time and place, and lives lost.
Amid the surrounding trees are the memorials vertical elements, these display the names and colour badges of the nations key military campaigns and highlight their global reach, they become brightly illuminated once the sun sets.
Collectively these design elements aim to engage visitors to learn, as well as provide space and cues for reflection and contemplation.
